"you are free to go"

Those 5 words have different meaning to different people in different circumstances. for some it may be a phrase they hear regularly on dispensation of service. It may also be a phrase that a parent says to his child who has served his domestic detention order.

Today however, this phrase was said to someone who REALLY wanted to hear it. I will never forget the look on his face when it was said to him. He had a look of utter relief and uncontrollable joy as he looked upward to the ceiling. As he tilt his head to the floor, he buried his face in his hands, and uttered words of thank to the Almighty. This man was convicted of drug trafficking and was sentenced to be hung until dead. He fought for his innocence. His appeal was heard and granted by the Court of Appeal. After the Court delivered its sentence, the interpreter walked to the dock where he was sitting and said to him, "You are free to go."

I cannot imagine at all how much those 5 words must have meant to him at that time. His life was on the line and it was his last bet to prove his innocence. It paid off in the end and the cuffs will be taken off his wrists. He gets to go home, where he will be received by all, eat warm home cooked meals and spend time with his love ones. Now he can go and earn a living, provide for his family and have some quality of life.

I lamented the fact that I have to come back after obtaining my CLP. I lamented the fact that I lacked options because of my national status then I complained that there was nothing much to do. I feared that I will regress and rot. I worked hard at my job, look for things to do to spend my time, taking time out with family, go on holidays and visit my friends and relatives, take up scuba diving, train in aikido, drive a fast car. I refused to give up and try to make my life the best I can.

But if I didn't have some sort of freedom in the first place, I couldn't even complain of my lack of options. I wouldn't be doing whatever I am doing now and having a great time. I am sure the accused would want to trade his life for mine at any time.

Don't take anything for granted Chui, because you don't know what will happen tomorrow. As long as you keep yourself in good health, earn a decent living and keep away from the long arms of the law...there are plenty of things you are free to do.

Carpe Diem.

Champion Reef dive

.
Finally after 4 months I get to blow bubbles again. I got to dive with my usual group and it was good to see my cousins Doreen and Jens after a while. The visibility as Champion Reef was good and I managed to spot quite a number of nudibranch. The visibility deteriorated at the second dive and we also experience some under and surface current. I really need to get a pair of fins as mine just doesn't get me anywhere when I had to swim across surface current.

My buddy MF telling me he is having a good time.

Cik Azli keeping an eye on us.

Interesting worm I saw. Don't know its name though hehehe.

More nudi!

MF trying to get a good shot.

How inviting

It's been a while since I had my chocolate pudding with MF, so much so that I didn't care for the fact that it wasn't Friday yesterday. MF has been asking me when we would ever meet up so I thought I'd seize the day. I guess MF did the same. Hehehe.

From the look of the picture I have decided to indulge in some self comfort by assuming that MF was happy to share some time with my company rather than sighting the chocolate pudding. Sorry Chin, our time will come.

I like my time with MF. Why? Well, MF has certain qualities which I find endearing as a friend and individual.

Honesty - sometimes to the extent of in your face but I can live with that.

Respect - he knows where to draw the line.

Heart - he really cares.

I think I shall stop at 3 before our friend ego get too inflated. Knowing that life is full of uncertainties, I can only hope and work to make all my friendship lasting ones. Whilst citing MF as an example, I cherish every friendship that comes by.

I will move on to cupcakes this weekend. It's been 2 weeks since I last had one!

In memoriam

We have but some seventy years
On this earth that the Lord gave us
We are not made to live alone
But with others by choice or fate

As I look back all these years
Fame or fortune matters not
What I cherish most when you were here
Was how you loved and cared for me

For it is memories like these
That I will keep
In my life here and beyond.

Something I could very well do with on certain days

I am a huge fan of chocolate eclairs among other things chocolate. Whenever I am at Saffron I would never miss the chance to have its chocolate eclair. Absolutely delicious. Chin is very observant and knows food that makes Choo very happy.

She decided to surprise me last night from with a whole box of big puffy chocolate eclairs from auntie Linda's! Oh the joy on my pace when I opened the box. I savoured one last night before retiring to my inviting bed. There is still plenty of them and I plan to share them with my family.

I just want to say a big thank you to Chin for this sweet and considerate gesture. I feel much better now...hehehehe. HUGS

Bookmaking class by Chin

After putting it off for a few months I finally got to attend a basic bookmaking session conducted by Chin. It was an enjoyable lesson. The teacher was softspoken, concise and clear with her instructions not to mention patient. You see, the students took frequent and extended breaks because we could not withstand the temptation of some very delicious refreshments sitting in the same room as us. "Come eat us"...they kept telling us...

Chin showing us how to use the drill. It is easy peasy we were told.

But I had my concerns...

Teacher took some shots while waiting for us to finish up a portion of our books.

Ta-dah! My book! As usual i would pick my favourite colour for the cover. I love the contrast red gives to the book cover.

Don't take me wrong...I am not your mushy girly type person but somehow the heart cushion felt right with the book.

I used the circles to symbolize life and my favourite activity...no prizes for guessing!

The inside of the cover. There is a name for it but I forgot. Cikgu marah ni...

I would like to go back for more classes. That will be after I finish my belly dancing classes that is.

What will the Pope say when he sees this in his hotel room?

Boring!

It is not a very good day for me today.

I am resting at home because of dizziness, throbbing headache and laboured breaths.

You know what that means?? One less day of aikido for me!

Hmph...

Fooooooooooooood

I now do my facials at kiulap.

One of those days as I walking down the stairs to my car after the session I caught the signboard of this restaurant. I said to myself, "another Korean restaurant!". Hmmm, I definitely need to try this place out. I called up Chin and LuLu (who is one heck of a beautician. Anyone who wants to try her out just give me a call.) Upon walking in, the decor strikes me as simple but rather dark. No matter. I am here to try out the food primarily. My companions were very considerate when it came to ordering food, as I am still in the middle of my 100 day vegetarian diet.

As usual the side dishes came first. Or are they appetizers?

I like the pickled radish and carrots. Sweet and sour...appetizing!

I really wanted to have rice so I ordered my favourtie type. Your garlic rice is still the best Moo.

The kimchi here is milder, something more to my taste. But that only means that I will take 2 pieces compared to the usual none! hahahahaha.

Then came the fried vegetables.

This is kimchi tofu. A sweetish and slightly sicy dish, it goes well with rice.

Fried rice cakes. While I was told that it has no meat in this dish, it actually has fish cakes! Chin tells me that while the marinade has gone into the fish cakes, she agrees with my that the taste did not go into the ricecakes.

Ah, my source of protein. Egg rolls. Everytime I see talur in cooked in one way or the other I would think about No. 2 and No. 4. They need to do a scramble egg cooking contest one of these days for mama and I to decide who cooks the best scramble egg. *grinning from ear to ear*

All and all it was a satisfactory meal. I was not able to enjoy the variety of selection on the menu. No matter, come the end of June 2009, I will be back to try out more of the dishes. Hey, I had great company!

Oh ye of little faith!

I heard that said to me for the first time in Malaysia. That happened in September 2008 when I joined the AWARE programme at Pulau Redang. Apart from diving we also had a clean up campaign of a certain stretch of the beach on the island.

Chong took down an inventory of the rubbish collected

I picked this up and asked of Chong, "What is this?"

"This my dear," replied Chong, "is the backbone of a cuttlefish."

Incredulous, I gave him dramatized doubtful look. He urged me to seek clarification if I thought he was lying. It turned out that he wasn't!

Sorry Chong! hehehehehe...

Oh I can have very little faith sometimes....

Chong, Jason, Mins and I on a great day at the beach
